Do you need a permit for a container in Germany?

All-Container guides2 min read

This is one of the questions we hear most often. In Germany there is no single answer: whether a container needs a building permit is decided by the building code of each federal state (Landesbauordnung) and by your local building authority.

What matters

  • Use: storage, office, workshop or living space. Containers used as rooms for people are generally treated as buildings.
  • Duration: temporary placement, for example as site equipment for the duration of a construction project, is often treated differently from permanent placement.
  • Size and location: the state building codes set limits for permit-free structures, and the local development plan (Bebauungsplan) may contain its own rules.
  • Foundation and connections: a container on blocks without utilities is assessed differently from one on a foundation with water, sewage or power connections.

What we recommend

  1. Ask your local building authority (Bauamt) before placing the container.
  2. Describe the use, dimensions, location on the plot and duration exactly.
  3. Keep the invoice and the container data sheet for your file.

Documents we provide

You receive an invoice and, on request, the container data sheet (dimensions, weight, material) – useful for any application to the building authority.
